On “Feels Like Home” and “Losing You,” the dignity that Diamond always exudes makes Newman’s pathos more palatable. The most revelatory tracks here, though, aren’t as well known: a pair of love ballads from Randy Newman’s extensive songbook. “Dreams,” a solid if strangely unspectacular set of interpretations, turns Diamond’s now-weatherbeaten voice on hit songs by (among others) Gladys Knight, Leonard Cohen and the Beatles. Because his voice is inimitable and his approach dramatic - this is a man who found epic poetry in the relationship between a bum and his bottle - he’s always been best at performing his own material. Pop junkies never doubted Diamond’s talent, but his craftsmanship often has been occluded by his taste for glitzy showbiz moves.
